If they don't want the citizenship, more than they don't want to be separated from their wife & children, then they can simply move back to their home country.
That does make it a very hard choice for their wife. Either move away with him, or remain & choose how they want to proceed with raising a family. Essentially as a single mother, or marry another man to help raise good children.
