This country took a huge nose dive after Eisenhower left, imho.
Pretty sure things were bad before then and Eisenhower went in naive, as to be expected of a wartime general.
He was too popular for the entrenched bureaucrats to mess with too much though, but to Eisenhower's chagrin, we ended up with a leftist majority in the courts.
From his farewell speech, he seemed to know what was up by the end of his two terms.
