That misinterpretation of scripture as you accurately put it, is rooted in the Counter-Reformation. The Catholic church needed to present alternatives to the Reformers, who all identified the pope as the anti-christ and the Catholic church as the woman riding the beast from Rev. 17
You've got me on this research because I have not gone down this path before.
But what is interesting is I got a call a few years ago, to go out to do some work at Turning Point of Pastor David Jeremiah fame and when I got there I was looking at a rather large warehouse.
The manager was a very nice man and had we had time he was actually going to give me a tour of the place and introduce me to Pastor Jeremiah but time was an issue for me so the tour never happened.
One thing the manager said to me was "we consider Catholics to be our brothers and sisters in Christ" which shocked me.
However today, it does not shock me.
The point I am making is there are lots of nice people in religions and denominations of all types but doctrine absolutely makes a difference.
Oh absolutely. And to be clear I don't think all Catholics are unsaved pagans. I just think the real christians in that church are trapped in a satanic system...erm...THE satanic system, the top dog...
From my understanding, Revelation calls it "Mystery Babylon the Great" and that it is a "mother", thus, we can see its "offspring" in all the numerous Orders and Societies (Knights of Malta, Jesuit Order, Knights Templar, Knights of the Holy Sepulchur, etc) as well as all the churches which sprung forth from it (EO, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, etc etc). Institutionalized religion itself appears to be the subject of God's condemnation. (No where in the New Testament is the church told to organize itself into multi-church governments with single nodes of power over multiple churches. The power structure stopped at the top of EACH LOCAL CHURCH.)
Furthermore, it is spiritually called Babylon, which is descended from the Tower of Babel, ie. the first time fallen man organized itself into a pyramid heirarchy with a single man at the top. And what does the Catholic church feature? Alas, it features a pyramid structure with a single man at the top! (the pope)
Another great post and I am glad to have run into you today.
Yes these days I have been hard on dispensationals because of their blind support of "Israil" which are antichrist but I need to show more mercy to a denomination that blessed my life with so many friends back in my 20's which was years ago.
I confess that as a young man in my early 20's when I was on my own I knew I had to find a venue where I could meet friends that would not cause me harm.
So I found a Baptist Church that I attended one Sunday morning. It didn't take long for the young people to find me.
It wasnt about doctrine at that age so much but about making friends and God blessed me and boy did he bless me in that decade with friends across that church and the next maga church that I attended.
My cup runneth over with friends back then.
I was in 7 weddings.
Then there is a time in life to grow up and pay attention to the details. "Doctrine"
When I mentioned to a friend in recent years to a problem I had with the dispensation doctrine he said to me "yes but didn' t you make a lot of friends at this church" ?
That was the perfect come back and he was right but truth and doctrine are important.
To your point is it possible for a person in a bad denomination or religous sect to be saved??
Of course there is. Calling and saving the Elect, his Elect is the sole responsibility of God Almighty. He will always find his people and uses us to spread his gospel. But with God, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.

For many are called but few are chosen.
