San Diegan here. Our county had some crazy gerrymandering the last time we redistricted. For example, a coastal zip code (92117) was cut was out of the district they belonged in and placed in a district a solid 30-minute drive east (La Mesa/El Cajon/Spring Valley). I think this redistricting is going to backfire big time on them as, with the feds watching, they won't be able to do such outrageous gerrymandering this time around.

It is also raising awareness. Someone in 92117 asked me what I thought of Newsom's redistricting. I told her what I said above and she said "what are you talking about?" She was HORRIFIED when she found out that what she thought was her more liberal zip code had been lumped into a more conservative zip code. When she asked why, I said "Because your zip code has a big middle eastern/asian population and so does El Cajon. They want the middle easterners/asians to have more voting power." She was like "Wait a minute... they gerrymandered on purpose to give more power to people who don't think women should have any rights at all?" And when I said yes, she was gobsmacked.
