At the best of times, their own middle class was pretty thin compared to the U.S.A.'s middle class. And mobility was always negligible by comparison. Those were countered by a much better safety net for both middle and poor classes, but that net seems to be unraveling together with the freedoms they used to enjoy ...

They don't have the money they used to because Trump upset their tariff apple cart. US was paying for their safety net.
