Digital forensics is an emerging industry, finding AI fingerprints
I agree, but I've worked in tech my whole life at a level above the understanding of most computer science graduates.
You cannot legislate morality. Which means, in this context, that you cannot defeat every angle of hiding the use of AI. As soon as a fingerprint is identifiable they will switch up.
Consider EXIF data in photos. Certain forums automatically scrub EXIF data from pictures so that they're not easily traced. EXIF data can contain info like GPS coordinates of where a picture was taken. This, at one time, would have been considered a "finger print" for identifying non-obvious info about a picture...... but now it is scrubbed.
Yes, it’s a nonstop arms race
Google is apparently fingerprinting their nano banana created images for copyright purposes..... so if you use them for commerce then they can sue you or demand payment. Their fingerprinting is purposefully made in a way to be hidden.
I considered that the way this likely works is they use a random seed that is encoded into the image "somewhere". This seed dictates things like:
So what you end up with is a red pixel that is a set number of points off from the red it's supposed to be and an exact distance between two other pixels that are an exact distance off from the color they are supposed to be. This can very easily be subtly hidden within an image and undetectable by a human or an algorithm.
If we could write algorithms to solve hidden things like this then we would be able to also crack every encryption known to man. It isn't easily possible to recognize such patterns..... so in this regard, the people adding fingerprints to things have a leg up on the white hats that wish to identify societal control mechanisms.
