I'd heard rumors for years so decided to look it up now.

I just did some resaerch & found this:

The removal of homosexuality from the DSM as a mental illness was a process that involved 8both scientific evidence and political activism*. It was not solely a political move nor purely scientific but rather a complex interplay of both.

Initially, homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder based on earlier cultural and scientific understandings. However, research by psychologists such as Evelyn Hooker showed no difference in mental health between homosexual and heterosexual individuals, which scientifically challenged its classification as a disorder. Alongside this, significant pressure and activism from the gay rights movement starting in the late 1960s and early 1970s played a crucial role in challenging the psychiatric status quo.

In 1973, after considerable debate and activism, the American Psychiatric Association’s board voted to remove homosexuality from the DSM. Dr. Robert Spitzer, a key figure in the APA, argued that for a condition to be a mental disorder, it must cause significant distress or impairment. Since homosexuality itself did not meet these criteria, it was removed from the classification. However, a compromise label "sexual orientation disturbance" was initially included for people distressed by their orientation, reflecting ongoing tensions within psychiatry.

Let's be real; it was probably 90%++ activist pressure, wailing & gnashing of teeth, and barely 10% a scientific decision.

It needs to legit be reclassified as mental illness, ESP. TRANS.
