To intercept and Ram the radar contact they believed was Flight 93 before it hit Washington D.C Airspace. Their potential sacrifice though ultimately proved unnecessary.
And on an unrelated note. The U.S also undertook one of the largest Maritime Evacuations since the evacuation at Dunkirk on 9/11. 150 ships. Ranging from Coast Guard Cutters to pleasure yachts, Ferry’s, Museum Ships, and tug boats coordinated the evacuation of almost 300,000 people from Manhattan. Including Casualties from Ground Zero. Along with landing additional supplies and First Responders.
