How did our ancestors in Europe? It’s life. You can’t stop and break down with every difficulty, tragedy, and setback. Day to day affairs and labor don’t stop because the plague killed the family next door. Or Raiders torched the market district.
Hell some of the particularly brutal conflicts saw towns and cities of thousands reduced to dozens. Or outright depopulated entirely. Just ruins where there should have been life.
It probably helped that everyone consumed copious amounts of alcohol. As whether Water would kill you could be a 50/50 shot at the best of times.
