I had the same problem yesterday without a VPN but my VPN got me back in. Today I rebooted my router to get a different IP address and that fixed it without needing the VPN.
So I recommend that everyone without a fixed IP address try rebooting their router.

Yes, I am sure that none of us mods did this, even by accident.
This is the most likely explanation.
I’m going to say it was DNS. The vpn like would get around DNS but a router reboot or upstream DNS update would fix this.
