Hence the USA Marine nickname leathernecks…first major enemy of the USA was muslim Barbary pirates who began attacking American shipping after the British navy ceased protecting USA ships. Thick leather collars were added to uniforms to help reduce injury from pirate swords.

The fight was then taken to the shores of Tripoli…to fight the muslim hordes…just like we must do today on our own shores…dramatic? Yep…necessary for survival…most definitely!
