Regardless, his meaning was misconstrued to insinuate he was being callous.
Unfortunately, in a free society, there are always risks in life. Do we ban cars because of a fatal wreck caused by a drunk driver who willingly got behind the wheel? Apply that to any possible scenario where injury or death is possible. The answer is that in all situations the best you can do is protect yourself, whether thats a seat belt, PPE at your job, following safety protocols around equipment/heavy machinery, or owning a gun.
Being able to protect ourselves from our government or others does come with a price, and in a perfect society that price never need be paid. But its not a perfect society, and anyone with a will to murder will find a way using whatever means are available.
