It sounds like a family member (sister? cousin?) thought the suspect looked like him, and was already thinking that he had been anti-Kirk for awhile. That person talked to the father about it.
Father then confronted son and son confessed. Father notified authorities, as father was a deputy sheriff himself.

I'm not surprised that he went to family. I will assume he is a Mormon. In that religion, the father is considered not just head of the household, he is given a priesthood over his whole family, he is capable of bestowing forgiveness, like Catholics would go to a priest for confession.
