Not to be contrary but the metaphorical connection makes me lean toward mist. Fog of war/ the inability to make out distinct shapes/ the way it throws light and shadow to create illusion. Mist does work in that sense. You're right. Especially since we are frogs and we like it misty. But, there are monsters in our mist!
