Human Society requires a founding Religious Mythos with which to orient itself. The Founding Mythos of the West for the last 120 odd plus years.
As more or less been a general opposition to anything not liberal. In both the modern progressive sense and the classical liberal sense. That opposition is best immortalized and symbolized by the subjects of so much Popular Culture. The Austrian Painter and Friends with the flying Windmill of Friendship.
Everything since has fundamentally organized itself around the post World Wars consensus.
The Western Elite, Really the American Elite technically given how many of them were based out of the U.S. Tried to remake the world in Americas image. ‘Free’ Democracies and Republics from sea to sea. Ruled by the Autonomous Individual and the ‘Free’ Markets. What we’re finding is our ancestors bungled it severely and everything is getting measurably worse as a system that was artificial in nature begins breaking down. And our political/Financial system, and the Elites that inhabit it, is stuck.
Because to admit the failure casts the last 200-300 years of enlightenment inspired political theory. The same theory that decidedly handed the West over to Merchants, Bankers, and Industrialists to rule. Well it casts that into doubt and means we have to go back to the drawing board for new ideas. Or to further refine the ideas of classical liberalism for another attempt.
I strongly suspect Western society will undoubtedly swing to trying to perfect classical liberalism for another attempt. If it breaks down again in another 200-300 years. We’ll be too dead to care and it’d be an issue for our great-great grandchildren to figure out. If not and it holds on. Cool. But we’ll ultimately still be too dead to care.
