What the heck! I was just reading how the Portland police are not working with ICE, so I wonder if this is because he was doing something that was seen as helping ICE rather than the criminals?

Well, yes, that's exactly what it was.

The Portland police have been ordered to stand down by the governor/mayor. The police there will protect Antifa but not citizens.
