"Civil disobedience is not something outside the realm of democracy. Democracy requires civil disobedience. Without civil disobedience democracy does not exist." Howard Zinn
Needless to say, civil disobedience is "problematic" in a lot of ways. The left could claim the law doesn't apply to them because they are "righteously resisting" (civil disobedience)... but, Trump would also by the same logic be justified in engaging in "civil disobedience" then by ignoring whatever laws or court orders are made.
I guess it's a question of when civil disobedience is justified. Usually for Christians it's just when the law compels a Christian to sin, I think.
Any thoughts on civil disobedience? Where it is correctly and incorrectly applied?
Your comment is an excellent one, BWR. I've seen many a Leftist on X rationalizing their behavior as noble civil disobedience.
Those comments have sent me down the same contemplative road that you're on.
There's a part of me that wants to use the cliché from that old Roth court case in 1964 when the judge said (in regards to what is pornography) "I know it when I see it".
Though I admit that isn't nearly good enough. The contemplation I've done on this has led me to a few things:
-Identify the specific law that people are engaging in civil disobedience against.
-Is this a law that is aligned with the freedoms and sovereignty that this country was founded upon?
-Does that law violate Natural Law?
Though I admit, not every law (and civil disobedience against that law) can be easily passed through this filter. Some are far more gray.
In regards to the current civil disobedience against ICE, that one is very simple for me. The President (and ICE) are doing nothing more than the enforcement of basic immigration law. I'm a staunch believer that nobody should be able to just come to this country without going through the proper immigration process.
That process, when applied properly, protects American workers and strengthens our workforce and consequently, our country. But that's obviously an easy one ; )
On this issue, as long as the military lawyers are honoring the Constitution and the law, I see no problem with it, nor any case for civil disobedience against it.
Howard Zin was a communist. I hate communists, communism and commsymps.
His book “People’s History of the United States” was an anti-American revisionist history screed full of lies, otherwise a perfectly nice rat faced scumbag.
Military is the only way
the only way is the military
THAT'S a slippery slope I can really get behind!
so something I was thinking about earlier was that Trump is following the law in most of these things
but it's interesting how America has had a general embrace of "civil disobedience" in its history...

Excellent post, BW&R.
There is a big difference between civil disobedience and insurrection and the invasion of a terrorist organization.

Very, very interesting in light of Q's past drops regarding the military.
Perhaps this is an intermediate step to get the public used to the idea of military judges presiding over matters of public security.
