The Trump administration has also sent “third-country” deportees to South Sudan, Ghana, and Rwanda. Most of these are bad criminals... murderers, rapists, etc... and they will be kept in correctional facilities in these deportee nations until they can be repatriated to their home countries.
Conditions might not be ideal, but I'm sure the 'cultural exchange' and learning a new language more than makes up for it. :>)
When the deportee prisoners arrive in Eswatini, they are put into prison in solitary confinement. It drives their deportation lawyers nuts, because the officials there aren't very accommodating about allowing access to these prisoners.
Some of these deportees are the worst of the worst. The thing is, in American prisons, the prisoners can expect at least a minimal standard of treatment. In Eswatini, or Ghana or South Sudan... I don't think that there is a minimal standard for prisoners.
In Ghana, prison conditions are generally harsh due to overcrowding, inadequate sanitary conditions, lack of medical care, and substandard food. Prisoners rely on family or charitable donations for adequate nutrition. Prisons are often located in aging or abandoned public or military buildings with poor ventilation, inadequate space and light, and insufficient toilets—some facilities have as many as 100 prisoners sharing one toilet, which frequently overflows.
Overcrowding is a chronic problem, with the prison population at 15,228 in 2023, exceeding the official capacity of 10,265 by 4,963 inmates.
In Eswatini, the prison conditions make it the better option of the 4 places to be sent. At least you get fed, they have better facilities and abuse isn't widespread.
South Sudan is the worst. You wouldn't want to end up in their confinement. Almost anywhere else would be better. It would almost make you wish you weren't an illegal immigrant criminal.
Rwanda would also NOT be a place you'd want to be held in prison, only slightly better than South Sudan. At least there's a chance that you will be held in a less horrible place, because they do have different levels of horrible.
