What kind do you have? Mine is 120lb Rottweiler German Shepard mutt. Insanely intelligent and very well trained, doesn't even wear a collar anymore. He has a glossy coat right now from fish oil. I toss him raw fish heads while gutting them all the time and it gosses people out but he looks so much more healthy the more time we spend at the river. Also helps that he swims like a fish and his favorite hobby is fetching sticks out of the rapids.
He is a long hair Rotty. He is 2, going on 3, but only about 80 lbs. He is so smart. Someone dumped him at my neighbor when he was barely able to drink milk. Once he finished with milk, I took him.
I've always had full German purebred Rottweilers. One was 155lbs, one was 145lbs and they both sank like boat anchors. Worked out pretty well since I have a pretty bad fly fishing habit. God put this mutt in my life and he swims like a muskrat. Kid was chained to a tree for 9 months and was basically feral. So unsocialized he made it 90 days in the clink because nobody would adopt him because he was terrified of everyone.
These nice ladies took him to their no kill shelter about the time I was almost scammed on a puppy deposit and they were gonna euthanize him. (Scamdemic) "give us a $600 deposit but you can't meet the puppy because of covid...". Hop on a Rottie rescue site and see him. Tell them he's a handsome kid and I'm interested. They ask if I know the breed, if I'm big enough to control a dog his size and explain he's basically wild.
Drove 90 miles, almost didn't take him, barking, snarling while fighting him into my truck. They were gonna wave the fees just so he had a human give him a shot at life but I paid them anyway. Nice ladies doing God's work...
It took him a few days to adjust and accept me but he's never once chewed anything he wasn't allowed, has never shit in the house, he's great with my nieces... he's just a giant gentle soul that had a shitty start at life. He's 4 now and snoring on his pile of toys as I type this. Best pooch ever, just needed some love and guidance. No collar now, no fence, comes in and out the house freely, rides around everywhere, chills in the corner or truck on jobsites, heels by my side with the snap of a finger in hotels or public...
I guess he's blessed with a decent emotional support human and I'm blessed with a good dog because I took a chance on the kid when nobody else would. Man's best friend, they know and understand more than some give them credit for.
Wow. You are so nice to take him. What a wonderful story.
My Snooky is very smart too and he used to chew everything during his puppy phase. Now he doesn't. He is so sweet. He still likes to chew fingers though affectionately. He is good on trails also but likes to shortcut. LOL
My 2 would do the same thing. There's an invisible line to the kitchen.
Mine eat raw but I also give them some with salt (ham neck).

Yeah, I did not know they swim so well. He is a good swimmer.
