This effect is caused by a horizontal rod that was used to keep the flag unfurled for photographs, which created wrinkles. The movement was a result of the astronauts planting it in the ground.

Lack of stars: The reason no stars appear in the photos is because the sky was not the subject of the pictures. The astronauts and the lunar landscape were brightly lit by the sun, so the camera's shutter speed and aperture were set for a fast, short exposure. Just as on Earth, this prevented the much dimmer starlight from being captured. Inconsistent shadows: Hoax believers claim multiple light sources, like a studio, created shadows of different lengths. Massive number of people: The Apollo program involved over 400,000 scientists, engineers, and technicians. The massive scale of the operation and the large number of people involved would have made covering up a hoax virtually impossible, as someone would have eventually come forward. Soviet monitoring: During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was in a fierce space race with the US and closely tracked the Apollo missions. They had their own tracking stations and would have been the first to expose any evidence of a hoax. Instead, they also monitored transmissions and confirmed the landings. International tracking: Facilities in countries other than the US—including in the UK, Australia, and Spain—also tracked the Apollo missions and confirmed their progress.
