Many pilots today would have a slim change doing a dead stick emergency landing.
When I flew a plane, I flew out of a short grass strip. I was taught to cut power downwind 800 ft opposite touchdown point. So essentially ever landing was dead stick.
The emergency procedure was same as landing. Pick a spot, commit to the spot, circle until you are 800 ft opposite touchdown point, and land.
I don't think pilots today are taught the same landing process since most train at a controlled airport. I watched enough flight tracker small plane landings to notice this usually is not the case.

" I flew out of a short grass strip."
...that is where the best pilots earned their chops...
Yup for sure.
Do they have grass in Alaska ? : )
