Reminds me of my son. I used to run track (relay) when I was a kid. When my little boy was in grade school, starting with kindergarten, when I'd pick him up from school, and we'd get 100 feet from my car, he and I would race to the car to see 'who would win'. I'd always run just fast enough to 'barely' beat him. One day when he was in the 5th grade, after he'd had a summer of youth football, he actually truly beat me! (I'm his mom.) I was so excited. He ended up being a pretty damn good athlete as he grew up.
