PS. side reflection: A lot of folks living in countries for who WW1 was a key, critical formative experience (i.e US, UK, maybe France, Germany) are exposed to the ww1 poppy thing as a part of growing up, so general knowledge on the topic is to be expected.
side note: there's a brilliant comedic series from Britain that provides a very funny, nuanced perspective on the British ww1 experience, aka life in the trenches. The whole series (season 4) is 6 episodes, but you can see a selected smattering here. "Black Adder Goes Forth"
Brilliant stuff, and a core role played by the actor known as a dramatic actor in the US in 'House'.
