Thank you, AD! "The Wreck..." was - to me - the most painful anti-war song I'd ever heard. A clue? "The ship was the pride of the American side..." and when I learned how badly wasted were the blood and treasure of the USA during the war of that era - and how badly used (horribly overloaded) was the ship and crew of the "Edmond" - I thought Mr. Lightfoot was a genius. And I hated him for making me understand.
FOREVER WARS OCCUR because we do not quickly enough eradicate the war-mongers. I don't know if Q ever warned us about letting them live too long...
But, on the other hand, decapitation strikes (that's what you are talking about) tend to not work. It's an old way of thinking to kill the leader., which has a Talmudic flavor.
To wit: Iran has at least eleven people lined up for each vital postion. in defence or government. So, if one, or even many, are killed, The Iranians have an immediate, automatic and trained replacement. In that case, decapitation strikes in general don't change the outcome of the war at alll, for example if the other side has a strong succession plan. If anything, the 12-day war caused Iranians to rally behind their government.
The other issue is: if you leave the heads of the snake in place as long as possible, in a war-scenario, it lends the opportunity to kill all the ardent believers, while the leaders increasingly look like idiots: e.g. the slaughter of the Banderites, currently; or the German Nazis in 1943 - a la attrition warfare. What happens is that the 'leader' becomes increasingly mad, for all to see. (Think of the movie Downfall).
It's gruesome to think about.
In any case, taking the position of 'there will be no decapitiaon strikes' still leaves the tpossibility hreat of decapitation. In Russia's case, for example, many pundits explain that Russia could easily turn Brussels, London or Rammstein, for example, into a parking lot. But they haven't yet ...

Rest in peace McSorley and Company.
And respect to the Captain and Sailors of the Arthur M. Anderson that ventured back into the storm searching for the Fitz and her crew.
And pay a thought to the Daniel J. Morrell. She was also lost in a November Storm in 1966. Took 28 of 29 souls to the bottom. The Carl Bradley was lost in 58. Also in a November gale. 33 of 35 went with her to the bottom.
November is a treacherous month on bodies of water far more treacherous than most give them credit for. Thousands of Ships and Thousands of Sailors lay on the bottom. Their final resting places known to no one but God.
Just noting here that the Edmond Fitzgerald was lost 50 years ago today!

Great song about a tragic event...π
I remember hearing the news the day after it happened. Just finished skiing and was walking out to the parking lot.....
I've spent a lot of time in small boats on Superior, large waves are much closer together than on the ocean, they dont have as much time to build.

Big story in my neck of the woods when it happened. I was a college freshman at the time.
