Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

If it is an ear infection, it most likely will need an antibiotic. I think common sense is compatible with natural healing without medication, but sometimes you try everything, acv ear drops, honey, golden seal, etc, and they do not get better. I have had cats and dogs all my life and sometimes my best efforts require meds.I had a cat who fell down the stairs once, and I did not know what to do. I did take her to the vets because it was beyond my ability to fix her. She was better in 3 days after the vet prescribed antibiotics, and she lived to be 19 years old. Prevention and diet and cleanliness all can avoid illness, but once it sets in, we need help. If I had an ear infection that will not clear up, or a strep throat, or bacterial pnuemonia, I would go to the doctor, if everything else failed. Dont throw the baby out with the bath water, antibiotics are appropriate with certain infections, I believe. 20 years ago I tried to treat what I thought was bronchitis. I did everything, kept getting sicker, when I did walk into the doctors, people turned and looked at me, I was gray and my oxygen was at 87. I was treated and felt better, but my lungs did not clear for almost 6 months, because I waited for so long. When I got better, my doctor, knowing I preferreed natural treatments, put me on Acetyl L Cysteine, been taking it daily since then, and never get lung trouble anymore. There are Vets who have on line services and will prescribe, but I would want an in person exam for my fur babies. And I am one of those hippies with cabinets full of herbs, I grow medicinal herbs, and shelves full of supplement, a juicer, etc.
