I was born and raised in a very catholic family, my grandfather went to mass and said the rosary everyday. My mother prayed to Mary and every saint until the day she died. I was an alterboy for years.

This is true. You can have a "personal relationship with Jesus", but He's always going to be your Lord, master and one day judge. He loves you, but it's a fatherly love. He wants you to try to do better... not just for you to continue sinning and doing whatever you want. Your father in your childhood didn't just let you do whatever you wanted and probably in that sense didn't try to be your "buddy", and the best wisdom we have is that your heavenly Father isn't like that either.
