So does discerning and being earnest and seeking righteousness.

Doing both to the best of one’s ability seems critical, for the precise reason you mention there (following pied piper), among others (condemning the innocent, missing the mark, shining light on darkness).

I have a feeling that before all this is done, all our shames will be known, so first and foremost try to get right with God.
