LGBTQ+ advocacy group complains that almost half of the queer characters on TV will be gone by next year
A new report from the GLAAD Media Institute, an extortion racket that threatens Hollywood creators if their films and shows aren't gay enough, published a report warning that 41% of the LGBTQ+ characters on TV will be gone by next year.
The purpose of TV shows is to sell ads. For movies it’s to sell tickets. That’s it. The “show” is irrelevant. The business model is to create whatever will put the most eyeballs in front of an ad stream or the most butts in seats. So you’re not targeting the general population but rather specific demographics. Characters thus reflect the desired target audience, not the general population, since the demographics of TV viewers or movie ticket buyers has not been representative of the general population for a long time.
When the demographics shift, the shows/movies shift to try to capture the largest share of the new demographics. That’s what’s going on, not any new “awareness” on the part of producers. A lot of themes have simply worn out their welcome and no longer match the tastes of those remaining few who want to watch ads or enjoy the movie theater “experience”.
