It almost seems that when the nature of wars was more kinetic, higher birthrates and larger families were fostered and encouraged to supply the war machine, but now that wars are waged in other ways that are less devastating in terms of loss of lives, birthrates are stunted to match the lower demand and to - along with weaker family/interpersonal ties - reduce populations and society dynamics to "more manageable levels".
