On the subject of Nazis vs. Communists, which is a perverted meme in itself, in the McCarthy era, both South Africa and the Netherlands suddenly pivoted and started labelling people as communists. They were aping USA, BTW. This indicates that the Nazis were actually in Global power, to me.
It explains why McCarthy went after Chaplin, for making a movie about a petty Dictator. Obviously Chaplin was a communist. Right? Right? I first saw that movie in the eighties, and to me it was like reading 1984. It was a warning.
One of my dear Dutch friends (now departed) was such a victim - she was labelled a communist, for wanting to learn Russian at University. She explained to me the fascination of their using a Greek looking script (like learning a secret code, she said), and the vastness of the country. Which, well the Netherlands is a pocket-hankie, so to a teenager, Russia is a mind-blowing thought of vast steppes, even horses galloping in herds, and sword-dances. (She also was very cultured - listened to all sorts of music). Anyway, as a knowledge-hungry teen, fresh out of school, it was a logical thought to learn the language, which was offered in the catalogue.
Some dickhead in the university reported her. I guess the Russian course was intel-bait. So, she had three weeks, before the authorities were threatening an arrest. She came to New Zealand just before turning 20. Bless her soul. There was a facebook community post when she died aged 79, and there were hundreds of people saying how she had brought happiness to their lives.
And she never learnt Russian, but was glad to see my front screen hold the Russian letters, which I had there for quick reference, because I was following map channels. Hence, the conversation above. At that time, I was stumped when the information I was seeking was not a Ukrainian map-channel, which helpfully used the Anglisized placenames. I guess I fell into at least learning to read the letters.
You see, we had a lot in common, I myself wanted to learn Russian at university, and my father had a conniption fit. He said he would disown me if I did. Very confusing, such vehement, but non-sensical behaviour from an intelligent father, for a nineteen-year old. But it started making sense when I befriended that lady. And that's decades later. < she was an empath, and practically wept when she found out my dad was also in New Zealand. Which was strange to me, but then ...
No-one ever talked about such cultural undercurrents. Even talking to a shrink (I did, because it was SO confusing - Why were Russian lessons such a TRIGGER): the stupid shrinks just shrugged their shoulders. Actually that is a scam as well, they never help. Have since learnt to pray.
Speaking of patterns: my FiL was brought up speaking Zulu, and hated seeing blacks being beaten (and raped) in the street. Apparently that makes one a communist. He had two weeks to leave SA.
