He appears to be a Sikh. They are very persecuted group by both Muslims and Hindis in India, as well as in Pakistan. My neighbors are Sikhs and they are very peaceful and loving people. Beyond looking different and following a different religion, generally Sikhs do not cause problems where they live and seem to assimilate well. To do otherwise would actually be against their religion. So would being a leech on society. As a whole, they are very industrious and hard working people. Just the kind of immigrant a country would want.
So, there may be some question as to the validity to the parent's claim of asylum that is now under review. Japan is overhauling their immigration policies and are reviewing all prior entry applications. This is due to the numbers of foreigners that filed bogus fraudulent applications and the numbers of illegal workers without valid visas already found in the country - mostly Chinese that have flooded into Japan over the last few years fleeing their failing economy. Japan has uncovered vast networks of Chinese operators that created an entire ecosystem pipeline to facilitate illegal entry. The Japanese immigration system had too many loopholes that the Chinese are very adept at exploiting. Japan is closing those loopholes as well as deportations.
The story says nothing about this guy actually being deported - only a possible threat of deportation. If this guy is under 20 he cannot apply yet for Japanese citizenship. Once he is 20, and since he has been in the country for more than 5 years, he can apply. He probably also speaks fluent Japanese. Applying for citizenship should not pose a problem for him.
The reporters of this story are from an English language Turkish based broadcaster. TRT World has been called out before for being biased in its reporting. So what is the slant here? Why choose to cover a story about Sikh's? Currently their population in Japan is only around 500 - mostly around Tokyo. It seems like TRT wants to show the Japanese as heartless and cruel - the same garbage reports you hear about the US in most international press coverage. The real problem in Japan is the Chinese population that has exploded and has been found to be severely gaming the system. The population of Chinese in the country was on trajectory to hit over one million next year. The Japanese public demanded that something be done curb the Chinese invasion that brought with it uncivilized and criminal behavior. But TRT World is not reporting on that part of Japan's crackdown story. I would not be shocked to find out the TRT World is getting CCP funding.
