Hi fren, here's a 2017 article from the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia with information from the Shooter's Union. It's a bit old, note it refers to 2.6 million legal firearms, which was the case in 2017.
It's an old article, but still contains good information. Scroll down to the 4th section.
"Firearms registration"
I'm glad you had the facts there at hand, the number of times i have had to explain to our US associates here about our 'giving up guns' is ridiculous. Bottom line is we are not born and raised with a 2A right and culture. We were born and raised with vegemite, life be in it, slip slop slap, football meat pies kangaroos and Holden cars, all of which seems a lifetime ago...
I agree fren. Australian society appears to be far more relaxed and easy going than the US.
It will be interesting to see the regulatory backlash from the Governments. It appears Western Australia has been a trial run. The new WA firearm regulations are quite severe.
As that saying goes, "We live in interesting times!"

The Myth about Australia being disarmed was another of Obama's lies to try to convince Americans to disarm.
As expected, the Australian Federal Government and the NSW Government are already talking about tougher firearm regulations!
