Before becoming the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the country was officially known as the State of Venezuela (1830-1856), then the Republic of Venezuela (1856-1864), followed by the United States of Venezuela (1864-1953), before reverting to the Republic of Venezuela (1953-1999) until the current name was adopted.
The name "Venezuela" itself comes from Amerigo Vespucci, who called the area "Little Venice" (Venezuela) due to stilt houses that reminded him of Venice.
