Yes - fortunately, Elijah seems to have recovered all right. I believe he has said that his mother was always there with him on set when he was young.

but another kid actor who was in Stand by Me - Wil Wheaton - has a major case of TDS and seems to be struggling in a lot of ways.

And yes, River Phoenix came from this weird hippy-dippy family. That would make their kids prime targets for pedophiles since the parents were not looking out for them as they should.
