California has 54 EVs which is just more 10% of the of 535. This is do to illegals being counted in the 2010 and 2020 census and claims can probably be made for previous censuses. Get the illegals out the percentage falls, and more EVs and House seats will be spread out to other states, probably in the interior states of the country.
Another problem with presidential elections is the winner take all format for a state’s EVs which is NOT in the Constitution. This nullifies the votes in Congressional districts won by the losing candidate. For example, in the 2024 elections, Kamala won California, allegedly, and got all 54 EVs. However, President Trump won 11 of the 52 Congressional districts while Kamala won the other 41. https://www.the-downballot.com/p/its-here-the-downballots-2024-presidential As winner of the state, she would also get the 2 EVs that represent the Senate seats. So instead of Kamala winning all 54, it should have been distributed to Kamala 43, President Trump 11. Now look at the results by county that we’ve all seen. https://vividmaps.com/2024-presidential-election-county-by-county/
If this were broken up by congressional districts, the democrats would have picked up only 72 EVs, while POTUS would have picked up 463. This is an electoral count that reflects how the nation voted.
There’s one more thing to consider. If we counted EVs this way, we would not have had Obama in 08 and 12 and we would not have had Clinton in 92 and 96. In fact, it would take some research to find an election that a Democrat won by winning the majority of congressional districts.
I challenge people to do the research to find what the results would have been in any election year.
