They certainly didn't protect them from 3rd World invaders. If these Nations weren't burdened with paying more Social benefits. Their Treasury would have had more.money. It is up to the USA to make this argument..Not a Russian living in Finland.
Greenland is more about resources than defense. U.S. already has ability to put just about whatever military presence there it wants to because of defense agreement signed in 1951. What the U.S. does NOT have is exclusive rights to natural resources located there and Greenland has made it pretty clear they will consider doing business with just about anyone - China included.
It is about future defense Trump is looking far ahead.
The glacier melt has opened new shipping lines directly from China and Russia. Making it far too easy for an attack, where there wasn't that risk before
Then why haven't we put more military there since we have that ability already? Agreement signed between Denmark and U.S. in 1951 allows U.S. to put military bases/ports pretty much anywhere on Greenland that the U.S. deems necessary. Territorial waters might be another consideration but I think getting the resources located there under exclusive U.S. control is the main goal.

Maybe because the US has been pulled and pushed into so many policing efforts worldwide that we’ve been stretched a little thin?
Yeah but those are mostly our own fault. We can choose to focus just on things that help us every now and then.
Agreed. The US “leadership” - previous administrations are at fault.
We do have military there based.
I'm aware of that. What's your point?
Look how much we sacrificed over the last 100+ years.
The Germans decimated them, twice.
They’d be speaking Soviet and German if it weren’t for the hundreds of thousands of American lives.
Then we spent trillions defending them for 80+ years after.
Greenland should be a gift to us.
