When my dad died, my mom got a bill from Social Security for the days of that month he didn't live. A threatening letter, I might add. She paid it right away and the bank made a mistake an added a zero to amount. So she was out $3,000 instead of $300. It took a long time to get that mistake fixed and SS to send a refund. And I don't know why, but she was never given a death benefit, nor was one given for her when she later passed away. (Maybe that needs to be requested, I don't know.)
I just don't understand having to pay back SS for the rest of the month they died in. First, way to go, scare widows who are still in shock over the death of a spouse. And like, what, tell the apartment complex that they need to reduce that month's rent because hey, the husband doesn't live there anymore. What are they thinking??

That's fucked up, I'm sorry
Because SSA is paid in advance. If you don't live the entire month, you are not entitled to the entire payment.
The $250 is paid to the Spouse, No one else.
Then take it out of the next check with an explanation.
But they keep all of the money that you paid in for your whole life if you die. I'd say it it a bit more than $250 that is owed.
Me and all my brothers and sisters got a check for $250 when my mom died. There are 7 of us !
Most of the time the death benefit is sent to the funeral home to apply to their bill.
Thanks! That's probably what happened.
