What the hell was going on in Maine? Or, was that a refueling stopover in their attempt to flee to Europe?

I did read they were stopping there to refuel before continuing on to France. Which makes you wonder why they needed to get to France so urgently that they were willing it try taking off in the middle of a blizzard.
