The artists who have stuck around the longest have sold their souls for the fame and fortune. Bono/U2, Madonna, Springsteen are prime examples. They've opted in to do their handlers bidding. While others from the same era like MJ, George Michael and Prince gave an FU to those same handlers, which resulted in their names/reputations being smeared and their eventual "deaths"
