Well, to be fair, in this interview they didn't explain the upside for Charlie to fake the assassination. Being faked, does explain a lot, however, the upside for Charlie would have to be the central plot to such a story.

Maybe he knew there was going to be a hit. Maybe they let it look like the hit was done.
