Backward masking was used on records all the way back in the 60s. "The 700 Club" once had a special program about it where a guy had a reel-to-reel tape recorder and played selections from hit records forward and backward. Some records are creepy, but a few have the backward masking added for fun. I have one 45 from the 60s by a bubblegum group that has an Indian chanting recording on the flip side. When you play it backwards, it's just the Howdy Doody theme song.
