I'm local to El Paso (live nearby) - Word around here is that some cartel drones were sweeping the area - FAA shutdown the airspace and the military shot them down. I can't confirm that but that's what has been making the rounds on social media. What I CAN confirm is that there are a bunch of helicopters buzzing around about 40 miles north of El Paso as I type this and they have been operational since before dawn.
The cartel was high on the bingo card. So what were they trying to do would be the big question? Were they armed and looking to attack something? Very interesting.
Who knows for sure? My guess is they (cartels) testing the airspace to see what the reaction (if any) would be. Border shutdown has severely hindered cartel human/drug trafficking operations so maybe they're trying to see what they could do with drones.
