Harry Truman refused to name a Vice President in 1945 when he succeeded FDR because he thought no one man should be allowed to select a potential President without the voters' say in the matter.
Twenty years later Nelson Rockefeller was a vigorous proponent of the 25th Amendment which allows the POTUS to name his successor should the VP's office become vacant. Rockefeller dearly wanted to be President, but he was considered unelectable.
Getting rid of Agnew cleared the path for getting rid of Nixon. Once Ford was made President, he "selected" Rockefeller to be his VP. Then, not one but two "lone nut" women tried to assassinate President Ford. Coincidence?

That is the public spin. The real reason is because he was involved in the murder of FDR and was afraid the Republic military was going to tribunal him (because he was former military). They likely did, but it took a while. December 1972 during inter-regnum period of Nixon II while Nixon was still C-I-C from 1st term, the "transition authority" Republic military likely gave Truman his tribunal and sentenced him to death. Nixon (C-I-C elect AND former C-I-C) then signed the execution order around Christmas 1972, imo. "Pneumonia" was cover.
Other former military likely given tribunals under Nixon: 1. Allen Dulles - post 1968 election with execution post inauguration in Jan 1969, 2. LBJ - post 1972 election with execution post inauguration on 22JAN1973 with "heart attack" as public cover.
It appears that Nelson Rockefeller got taken out in 1979 under "Carter admin". His death was unlikely "natural". Unclear if that was a military tribunal, but the whole Carter admin period was likely under Republic military supervision per COG authority initiated either by Nixon or Ford, triggered by stolen election of 1976 orchestrated by Soviet/MI-6 agent Walter Mondale.
