Oh I'm VERY familiar with the .308 (or 7.62x51 NATO as we called it when I humped an M-14 for 2 years back in the day)... I know it's destructive force. I have an AR-10 and two other .308 rifles and shoot them periodically. I just wouldn't trust the round to penetrate very much into an engine block, the round deforms rapidly on steel, although I HAVE seen just a regular bullet, not even AP greed tip, pierce through a couple of stacked steel plates. A 20-round mag dump would certainly do an engine some damage, I'll give you that... but I wouldn't rely on it happening... especially when there are softer targets sitting in the driver's and passenger's seats.
.308 is a bigger cartridge than most give it credit
fmj to the engine, especially 20 rounds at a time, is going to stop a van
