What the Spanish prime minister is doing here is increasingly painting Spain into a corner. The fact that Spain, of all countries, currently represents the most left-wing anti-American thinking in Europe is dangerous. Spain has acted extremely irresponsibly over the past three decades by spending the least of all European NATO member states on defense as a percentage of GDP. This has created the financial leeway to develop an unsustainable welfare state that is currently being exploited by immigrants. The recent decision by Sánchez and his government to provide 500,000 immigrants (many of them illegally in Spain) with a fast-track route to citizenship is equally irresponsible. Sánchez's Socialists did not even finish first in the last Spanish general election in July 2023. They came in second with 31.7% of the vote to the center-right Spanish People's Party. Yet Sánchez has managed to cobble together a coalition government with separatist, smaller leftist and regional parties, which has kept him in power for almost three years. Every poll in Spain shows that he will lose badly in the next election. Sánchez's insults to the US president are irresponsible and stand in stark contrast to, for example, the words of the German Chancellor yesterday. The Spanish should instead start doing their part by contributing to the defense of Europe and the protection of Europe's borders. Given the general sentiment in Europe, Sánchez is on the periphery of the general feeling on these issues in Europe. He should therefore do his job instead of publicly criticizing the US, on whom he is very dependent for trade and investment.
