Reagan made it clear that he was going to defeat the USSR ... he succeeded, though he never should have fallen for that bullshit amnesty bill that was pretty much the DS's fallback plan once it was clear that the USSR was going to shit. Moreover, the USSR had a vested interest in a hostile Iran ... the Soviets would have risked nuclear war defending that country had we attacked.
