Or they gain an advantage at this time to have Iran seen less powerful.

While it could be the USA hitting pressure points, Occam's Razor leads to it be they gain something out of it. If you can figure that out you will have a huge advantage in life and business.

Possibilities:

Irans influence decreasing leading to decrease in the deep state grip on the country's infrastructure, including news.
Portraying Iran as a way to pressure Iran into some concessions
Qatar deep state already flippedby Trump, but now Trump has greenlit making it public
