Both China and Russia continue to supply Iran with components and intelligence that allows Iran to continue building weapons. Most of the aid comes from China that has quickly helped Iran rebuild weapons capacity after Midnight Hammer in June of last year. Part of Iran's defiance comes from Beijing's continued support.
There are well established supply networks and routes built to evade sanctions and which have been operational for years. Built by Xi's close advisor on military-industrial and Iran-related matters, Zhang Guoqing. Zhang built his career as a representative for Norinco in Tehran during the 80s and 90s. He played a central role in establishing China’s defense and infrastructure ties with Iran which included securing an $800 million contract for Tehran’s Metro Line 4 in 2004. This typical BRI project served as a cover for deeper military-industrial cooperation between Iran and China - all coordinated by Zhang. However, Zhang's position appears to now be under pressure. Most of the weapons systems, especially China's air defense and radar systems supplied to Iran, failed miserably under real battlefield conditions. Hundreds of heads in China's MIC are currently rolling given the recent failures in Pakistan, Venezuela, and now Iran. Questions are being asked about the PLA's own current state of its weapons systems and military readiness. All this at a time when Xi has all but decapitated the PLA's command structure.
Several Chinese technical advisers specializing in nuclear, missiles, and radar, were killed in Iran during the opening days of the US/Israeli operations in Iran. Without a word, the prominent institutional public profiles of these experts have completely disappeared from online. China is being very closed mouth about having the level of support on the ground in Iran that they have installed. To publicize this would completely contradict their public stance calling for restraint and non-involvement. They are terrified of secondary sanctions by Trump. Why do you think that Trump keeps specifically calling out China by name when he asks for help opening up the Strait? I think it is because Trump has known what they are doing and China knows we know now - and we have the receipts. Trump simply hasn't pulled the pin on that grenade publicly - yet. Trump doing what Trump does best - he is trolling Xi who is sweating bullets right now because of internal as well as external issues. Winnie the Pooh was caught with his hands deep in the honey jar. This may have also been a factor in Trump's decision to postpone his meeting with Xi originally scheduled for the end of this month. Trump was supposed to meet with Xi on April 1st.
