The California High-Speed Rail project has spent over $15 billion during 16–18 years of construction, and it's projected costs for the full system are now over $135 billion.
Sort of makes the Moon Base seem like a bargain. In California, we can't even lay 170 miles of high speed track and build the train stations (nothing is even finished yet)... but we can launch rockets to the moon and build a Moon Base for 1/5th that total cost.

Maybe laying track to the moon would be complete before the Cali high speed rail.
