Basic facts are useless as facts can change. What the world needs is a center of authority. We have one called the Word of God. Without it, it doesnt matter what you agree on. Unless it is truth its as useless as a politician.
Most common knowledge facts don't change. It's a fact when the Civil War occurred, that fire is hot, and many other things. But the latest generations don't know any facts at all. They can just doom scroll on phones and iPads and shout nonsense words as if they are hilarious jokes, such as "6-7" and "Ohio." They are the definition of clueless.
Common facts are not the crux of truth. Truth is immutable. Truth needs no defense. Again facts are subjective and can change. No point in agreeing on a common fact if its wrong.
When the Civil War happened cannot change. 1+1=2 won't ever change. The Bible is truth, cover to cover, although that now depends on which version you buy. Some of them have (NIV) so many changes, it takes an entire book to document them and show their falsity.

Maybe instead of “basic facts” he should have said something like “acknowledgement of reality”.
